of the terri-fic conflicts the ground was strewnwith the dead and dying. Thewounded, in whom there was a hopeof life, were given immediate careand hurried on stretchers to nearbyhouses and barns from which floatedthe yellow flag of the Medical De-partment. Large hospital tents wereerected near the scene of battle. Attimes all the rooms in the surround-ing farmhouses were full of wound-ed; the injured men were laid oncornstalks and hay in the barns.Sometimes it was impossible to findshelter for them all and they werelaid on boards inclined against fences. Many of the large trees formed ashelter for a temporary hospital, where the men were laid in rowswhile the attendants administered totheir wants. In no previous war inthe history of the world was so muchdone to alleviate suffering as in theWar of 1861-1865. But notwith-standing all that was done, thewounded suffered horribly. Afterany great battle it required severaldays and nights of steady work beforeall the wounded men were gathered.
