Newcastle from the Dyke, 1904 (3649149179)
Summary
This view from above the Bullock Island railway shows colliers being loaded along Dyke wharf by hydraulic cranes. These were powered from the incongruous Italianate pumphouse on the left, which still stands in Carrington. Across North Harbour is Stockton, with Nobby Head in the distance. Newcastle is to the right. Hetton colliery on the far left was one of the few still in Newcastle.
