New York's Life Jacket Law 10 NEW YORK, NY

description

Summary

NEW YORK--Coast Guard Seaman John Lowell maneuvers a 25-foot response boat before a safety boarding on a recreational boat in Long Island Sound, N.Y., Nov. 21, 2009.
Boarding teams from the Coast Guard and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation conducted educational outreach to recreational boaters with boats 21-feet and under in length regarding a new New York State law, which says that each boater on board must be wearing a life jacket while underway during the winter months.
The change in the state boating law was enacted in November of 2009 after a rash of incidents resulting in fatalities with boaters who were not actually wearing their life jacket. Just having a personal flotation device accessible while underway is not enough; life jackets must be worn.
