description

Summary

Navy veteran and diver Jack Monro holds a spike from the first USS New Hampshire, a 74-gun ship of the line laid down in 1819 and launched in 1864 from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Monro and two other former Navy divers recovered the spike during a dive of the remains of the original New Hampshire, which sank in Massachusetts Bay in 1922 after catching fire while being towed to the Bay of Fundy in Maine. The spike was presented to Aderhold and the crew of the Virginia-class submarine Pre-commissioning Unit New Hampshire while the crew prepared for the boat's commissioning ceremony Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008. New Hampshire is the fifth submarine in the Virginia class, the first major U.S. Navy combatant vessel class designed with the post-Cold War security environment in mind.
