Summary
Monument Square Methodist Church from mon[ument] grounds. Built in 1848, and enlarged in 1866. On the Sunday after Easter in 1882, the largest Protestant church attendance of the day was that of the Monument Square, or Union, Methodist Church -- 1025 at the two services. On the corresponding Sunday five years later, when the population of the town had increased by 4,000, the attendance at this and the other Protestant churches had dropped 35%.
