description

Summary

Irwin H. Hoover (1871-1933), known as Ike Hoover, was a White House usher for forty-two years. This sixty-one page poignant and intimate behind-the-scenes description of President Taft's leaving office and Mr. Wilson's first inauguration probably served, along with Hoover's other memoirs, as the basis for the section, "Taft out--Wilson in: a typical inauguration day," pages [49]-59, in Hoover's published memoir on his White House years: Forty-two Years in the White House. (Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin & Co., 1933; reprinted Westport, Conn.: Greenwood Press, 1974). Call number: E176.l H78. See also the photograph of President-elect Wilson and President Taft at the White House on this Web site which seems to be the occasion described on pages [9-11] of this memoir.
