orman Church now turned forsupport, no longer to the Norman duke, but to the Roman pope.Its ideal had become the strongly Gregorianized church organ-ization of France; and to France it looked for models ofadministration and culture. The Norman schools had long sincefallen into disrepute; instead of the foreign scholars who for-merly thronged to Normandy for instruction, Norman scholarsnow went to France. Such was the transformation that hadbeen wrought in the character of the Norman Church in lessthan a century. This transformation would be sufficient to account for therelaxation in building activity in Normandy during the XIIcentury. There were, however, other causes which contributedto this result. The condition of the country was much unsettledafter the death of the Conqueror. The reign of Robert (1087-1116) was a period of wretchedness, during which Normandyrelapsed into feudal violence and the extreme of misery.
