Name: Matthew Walls.Arrested for: not given.Arrested at: North Shields Police Station.Arrested on: 24 February 1908.Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-123-Matthew Walls..The Shields Daily News for 24 February 1908 reports:. .“STEALING MONEY FROM CHILDREN AT NORTH SHIELDS.. .At North Shields Police Court today, Matthew Walls (13), residing at 20 Bath Street, South Shields, was charged with stealing on the 2nd inst. from a little girl named Gertrude Long, while in Saville Street, 1s in money.. .PC Legg stated that on Saturday morning he was on duty in plain clothes in Saville Street keeping observation on the movements of the defendant for some time. He accosted five different children and when the little girl Long came along, he walked by her side and then snatched the 1s from her hand. He made off with the money, but witness gave chase and caught him in Church Way. He (witness) was placed in duty on Saville Street in consequence on numerous complaints concerning children being molested and money taken from them.. .There were two more charges of a similar character preferred against the accused, but in one of the cases the complainant failed to identify the boy. Defendant admitted the theft in two cases and the magistrates ordered him to receive eight strokes with the birch rod. A mug shot or mugshot is a photographic portrait of a person from the waist up, typically taken after a person is arrested made with a purpose to have a photographic record for identification purposes by victims, the public and investigators. A typical mug shot is two-part, with one side-view, and one front-view. The paired arrangement may have been inspired by the 1865 prison portraits taken by Alexander Gardner of accused conspirators in the Lincoln assassination trial, though Gardner's photographs were full-body portraits with only the heads turned for the profile shots. The earliest mugshot photos of prisoners may have been taken in Belgium in 1843 and 1844. In the UK, the police of London started taking mugshots in 1846. By 1857, the New York City Police Department had a gallery where daguerreotypes of criminals were displayed.
