108. Massa village. TO GARUA VIA LAI 109 came upon them when he was navigating the Mao-Kebbi. They are a wonderful sight, for the waterdashes down from a height of over 160 feet. I rodeover the stony hills, and again struck the Mao-Kebbi,here known as the Mao-Pe. It is a true forest stream,; surrounded by beautiful woods, but its banks swarmwith tsetse flies. Further on I crossed the dry bedsof the Mao-Lede, the Mao-Deng, and the Mao-Koddi. The road rises steadily towards the West, and abeautiful view is disclosed extending as far as themountains of German Binder.We reached Lere on the 9th of June. (Illus. 113.)I The castle-like houses built by the Mundangs are realworks of art. (Illus. 117.) Lere is unique as regardsboth the architecture and the distribution of its houses.Straight lines are the ruling principle, the walls being per-pendicular and the roofs horizontal.
