Summary

Children's book author Margaret Wise Brown

Consuelo Kanaga (1894-1978) was an American photographer known for her portraiture and documentary photography. Born in Astoria, Oregon, Kanaga studied at the Clarence H. White School of Photography in New York City and later worked as a portrait photographer for Vanity Fair and Vogue magazines. Kanaga's photographs often focus on marginalised communities, including African Americans, Native Americans and women. She was particularly interested in capturing the dignity and humanity of her subjects, and her work often challenged stereotypes and prejudices. One of Kanaga's most famous photographs is 'Annie Mae Merriweather', a portrait of a young African American girl that was included in the landmark 1937 exhibition 'American Photographs' at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Kanaga's work was also included in other major exhibitions, including 'The Family of Man' at the Museum of Modern Art in 1955. Kanaga was an influential figure in the world of photography, and her work continues to be celebrated for its artistic and social significance.
