Jose Malhoa (1855–1933) was a painter, the largest representative of Portuguese Realism. Malhoa gained a reputation as one of the most famous Portuguese artists of his time. He painted historical canvases, in particular, for a picture depicting the departure of the Vasco da Gama expedition, he received first prize in a competition in 1887 and was awarded the Order of Christ by royal decree the following year. José Malhoa developed his style of painting, close to impressionism, which had no analogs in Portuguese painting before him.
