Konstantin Yegorovich Makovsky (1839-1915) was a renowned Russian painter, known for his contributions to the realist and historical genres. Born in Moscow into a family of artists, he received his initial training at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He later continued his studies at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg. Makovsky became known for his depictions of Russian life, particularly scenes from the 17th and 18th centuries, which often featured rich colours, intricate detail and a romanticised portrayal of historical events. He was also skilled in portraiture and genre painting, capturing the everyday lives of people from different social classes. Throughout his career, Makovsky received numerous awards and honours for his work, including prestigious commissions from the Russian Imperial Family and other notable patrons.
