Summary

"A view taken near Limehouse Bridge looking down the Thames". Etching by an unknown artist of German school; published in Nuremberg around 1720-1750 by Georg Daniel Heumann . Barges, rowing boats and large ships are visible.
Limehouse Bridge Dock is the first indentation on the left of the picture; it was crossed by a drawbridge - hence its name. In the late 19th century this dock was filled in and the site became Paper Mills Wharf, Narrow Street, Limehouse. The sailing ship, distant left, is moored in Limekiln Dock. The curator's notes at the British Museum assert that the view is towards "Limehouse Basin". This is a mistake: there were three different Limehouse basins at various times, but none of these had been built at this date of this etching.
