Letter from Simeon Smith Jocelyn, New Haven, [Connecticut], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1833 March 29

Simeon Smith Jocelyn writes to William Lloyd Garrison asking him to sit for his brother, Nathaniel Jocelyn, "for a portrait before you leave for England." Jocelyn says he wishes to publish Garrison's portrait while he is England and suggests it may even lead Garrison's opponents "to a more favorable examination of your principles." Furthermore, Jocelyn says that his brother is "acquainted in London and with one of the principal Anti-Slavery men - W[illia]m Allen - you may perhaps spend time with him to advantage." He then discusses his determination "to sustain Miss [Prudence] Crandall," calling her "a noble soul," before praising Arnold Buffum as "admirably calculated to discuss the question of colonization as well as slavery." In the postscript, Jocelyn asks if "some course should be taken" to publish additional copies of Garrison's "Thoughts on African Colonization" before he returns from England.
