Letter from George W. Putnam, Lynn, [Massachusetts], to Samuel May, 1851 Sept[ember] 17th

description

Summary

George W. Putnam writes to Samuel May referencing another letter he sent him the day before about possibly lecturing in Maine with James Buffum. Putnam says that due to a severe cold he would "rather go into some of the inland towns of Massachusetts for a while, if it would suit you as well." He hopes that since May told him he "had no particular plan" he could "go up in Berkshire, Franklin or Hampshire Counties, away from the sea coast for the present." However, he asks May not to change any arrangements if he has already made them. Putnam also tells May a suggestion from a man he met at the last meeting in Bellingham, Cyrus Cook, who asked if they could hold a meeting in his town of Cumberland Hill [Rhode Island]. Putnam says he believes the area "is new ground or nearly so" and recommends they hold "one or two evening lectures" there.
