Lehigh Canal, Guard Lock 8 & Lockhouse, Island Park Road, Glendon, Northampton County, PA

Significance: 22 feet by 100 feet guard lock constructed in 1829 by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company. The first of now three locks in the 2.5 mile Section Eight between the Chain Dam and the outlet lock in South Easton. Lift: 1.0 feet. The lock is operable and in excellent condition after its restoration in 1977-78. The gates to the adjacent feeder channel date to the early 20th century when increasing amounts of water were required to supply the hydro-electric plant at Lock 47. Several gates remain in use. The two and one-half story wood-frame lockhouse is the second to stand on the present spot and the third house to be built at this lock. (The earliest stone house was removed with the construction of the adjacent Lehigh Valley Railroad in the 1850's) The house has recently been restored and the first floor turned into a museum.
