Summary
Dating back to the Middle Ages, the markets known as les Halles were a main source for everyday groceries and general food products in 19th century Paris. They were destroyed and rebuilt in 1851 in an attempt to modernize the 800 year old architecture, but were later demolished in 1969. This aerial view represents les Halles and their surroundings in 1849.
