Le Crieur de Versaille (BM 1862,0614.1382)
Summary
Louis XIV as the town crier of Versailles finely dressed in a cloak with fleur-de-lis, stands on a pavement ringing a bell; beside him is his dog wearing a spiked collar, and beyond a representation of the naval battle of La Hogue. Louis holds in his left hand a list of ships lost in the battle for the return of which he is offering a reward. Engraved verses below, referring to the victory of the British and Dutch fleet under Admirals Russell and Almonde, and text within the image.
