description

Summary

Lairgate was originally known in the mid 13th century as Lathegate, the street with the barns.
This photograph is dated around 1904 at the earliest, with the road signs on the left. A 5 m.p.h speed limit had been introduced under a by-law in North Bar Within and the Market Place.
Elsewhere in the town, the speed limit was 20 m.p.h having been increased from 12m.p.h in 1903.
On the right of the photograph is Altham’s stores on the corner of Old Waste.
