Summary

At sea aboard USS Harry S. Truman Boatswains Mates keep a hold on phone and distance wires on the ships flight deck during an underway replenishment (UNREP) with the Military Sealift Command auxiliary combat stores ship USNS Spica (T-AFS 9). Phone and distance wires are used for sound powered phone communications between the two ships and for gauging distance. Underway Replenishment is the method by which provisions, ammunition and fuel are transferred from one ship to another at sea. The technique enables a fleet or naval formation to remain at sea for prolonged periods of time. Harry S. Truman is on a regularly scheduled deployment, conducting missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate 3rd Class Danny Ewing Jr. File# 021218-N-4953E-001

The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
