description

Summary

"Śiva meditating.
Śiva sits on a tiger skin meditating beneath a banyan tree in a hilly landscape. His knees are bound by a yogapatta. In his upper right hand he carries a damaru, in his upper hand the mriga, his lower right hand carries the rudrakshamala and the lower left rests on his flexed knee. The god wears the usual ornaments, particularly elaborate here are his epaulettes. An angavastra is draped on his shoulders and his third eye is clearly open.
His wife Parvati feels neglected and so she commands a diminutive green-complexioned Kama (located to the right of the god), who kneels on his parrot-drawn chariot while aiming his flowery arrow of love at the meditating god. Angry at being disturbed Śiva opens his third eye in anticipation of destroying the hapless messanger.
Great care has been taken in the depiction of the sugar cane bow with its string of bees, as well as in that of the lotus-tipped arrow of the god.
Noteworthy is the Vaishnava namam on Kama's forehead and arms.

The foreground is enlivened by rolling hills and tufts of grass."
