Jean Raoux was a pupil of Antoine Ranc and Hyacinthe Rigaud. Raoux won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1704, but instead of going to Italy, he stayed in Paris, where he became a successful portraitist. He was elected to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1717, and became a professor at the Academy in 1720. Raoux's style was influenced by Dutch and Flemish genre painting, and his subjects included scenes from everyday life as well as portraits. He died in Paris in 1734.
