Italian - Dish with Diana and Her Nymphs Bathing - Walters 481316
Summary
The moon-goddess Diana was accompanied by a group of chaste nymphs. Seated under an elaborate fountain, the goddess, attended to by two of her followers, can be recognized by the crescent moon on her head. The dish shows how the artist imitated the style of contemporary painting with bulky figures represented in complex turning poses. The back also shows a scene related to the element of water: Neptune, the god of the sea, astride two dolphins.
