rted to the General that, if hewould lend me Kellys brigade awhile, I could make thatplace secure for a battery of artillery. He regretted hecould not comply with my request at the moment. At midnight Gracies brigade and Jeffreys battery wereput across the creek. The Chickamauga is crossed by two bridges and threefords. The plan of attack is about as follows: Gen.Bushrod Johnsons division is to cross at the lower bridge(Breeds), push on up stream, on the opposite side.When opposite the second bridge (Alexanders), Walkersdivision is to cross and support Johnsons movement.Buckner is to cross at Tedfords Ford. Polks corps is atLee and Gordons Mill, and D. H. Hills corps, theextreme left, at Crawfish-spring Ford. They will conform to the movements of Johnson,Walker, and Buckner. At daybreak on the morning of the 19th, Kellys andTriggs brigades, with Wollihans and Peoples batteries,crossed at Tedfords Ford. At <S.30 A.M., Johnson is already engaged on the right.The firing is heavy. ^ ^=

THE WASHINGTON ARTILLERY. Til After crossing the Chickamauga the division is formed incolumn of brigades at right-angles with the stream. Theenemy is in plain view at Lee and Gordons Mill. Johnson is forcing the enemy back towards the Chatta-nooga road. We opened fire upon the enemy at Lee andGordons Mill with a rifle-gun. At 10.40 he replied withlong-range Parrott guns, causing us to cease firing, andkilling a lieutenant and two men in Triggs brigade, anddemoralizing somewhat our men, as it always does troopswhen lying down under artillery fire awaiting orders. 12 M. Firing very heavy on the right; Johnson andWalker hard at it. At 4 P.M. our division advances.Trigg moved to the right, and the line of battle made toconnect. Our forces are swinging around towards theChattanooga road, and pivoting on Prestons division, theleft of the line. Triggs skirmishers become engaged, andthen his brigade, and he loses nearly two hundred men. 7 P.M. Very heavy skirmishing in front of us, andheavy f
