Hunnewell house - Charleston, Boston Mass.

Hunnewell house. Built just after 1817 by Joseph Thompson. Soon after occupied by Amos Binney, one of the wealthiest men of Boston, and then by Commodore Perry, U.S.N. (afterward the widely known commander of the Japan Expedition). The grounds were as elaborate as any in the town. The present Boys' Club on Green Street, opposite the First Church, occupies the same site. Purchased by James Hunnewell in 1831 soon after returning from many trips to the Hawaiian Islands. In 1887, he entertained Queen Kapiolani and Princess Lilinokalani and two princes who became Kings Kamehemeha IV and V. James F. Hunnewell there had his private business room "where he kept his library of Charlestown books and wrote "A Century of Town Life."
