Horace Vernet - La Barrière de Clichy
Summary
The artist depicts the defense of Paris on the 30th of march 1814. In the centre, marshal Moncey gives his orders to goldsmith Claude Odiot, colonel of the national guard, for whom the painting was made. This art piece was commissioned by Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot, who served as a French colonel during the courageous but doomed defence of Paris 1814.
Horace Vernet (1789–1863) was a French painter of sporting subjects and vast battle panoramas, notably those in the Gallery of Battles at Versailles. The son and grandson, respectively, of two well-known painters, Carle Vernet and Joseph Vernet, Horace developed a remarkable facility for working on a grand scale and became one of France’s most important military painters.
