The previous identification of this ship as HMS 'Champion' is incorrect since 'Champion' had two funnels whereas this ship has three. It is in fact a very accurate record, from broad on the port bow, of one of the 'Caroline'-class light cruisers delivered from 1914 (with 'Caroline' herself today preserved as a historic vessel at Portsmouth). The six ships in the class could be differentiated by the arrangement of scuttles in the hull near the break in the forecastle. The arrangement of scuttles, and other very minor details here, indicate that this is the 'Comus' (1914). The 'Carysfort' (1914) was very similar, the only noticeable difference between the two being the position of the boat-boom heel and steps near the break of the forecastle.
