Summary

The light cruiser HMAS Pioneer in the Selbourne dry dock at Simonstown, South Africa. During 1915 and 1916 Pioneer remained off German East Africa, now Tanzania (ex Tanganyika), to blokade any attempts by Germany to resupply its forces ashore. She had earlier taken part in the successul operation to search out and destroy the Germany cruiser SMS Koenigsberg which had sought refuge up the Rufigi (Rufiji) River. HMAS Pioneer returned to Australia in October 1916, was paid off and ultimately scuttled off Sydney Heads in 1931.
