Summary

The first flagship of the newly formed Royal Australian Navy, HMAS Australia (1911), viewed from starboard side in Sydney Harbour. Canvas awnings are covering the midship and poop decks, and torpedo-net booms are diagonally placed along the hull of the ship. This image is thought to be of Australia's arrival in Sydney Harbour in October 1913.
This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872–1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the age of sail and two World Wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
