In a window embrasure at theleft a womans knitting has been laid aside, beside avacant chair which stands by the end of a heavy longtable on which are a wine bottle and water pitcher andsome cups. In front of the table are the children, onea small girl in green and blue wearing a white cap,who sits with back to the spectator, busily amusingherself. The other child, older, stands at her left andis seen in profile, with long brown hair falling over redjacketed shoulders. Signed at the lower left, C. Pissarbo, 89. Purchased of James P. Silo, New York, 1908.

Fantin-Latour _ Fkench: 1836— / ^ 47—THE CHAT: TWO WOMEN IN A WOOD Height, 10% inches; length, 14sy2 inches The spectator is within the shelter of the corner of awood, a road of exit leading from the right foregroundback through the central middle distance to wild, roll-ing fields in soft sunlight. At either side the foliageis a rich, deep emerald, denser leafage at the left cast-ing a delicate shadow over a dark-haired young womanin a crimson gown reclining at the foot of a tree. Sheturns her head to converse with a fair-haired sister wholies almost nude on the grass, where she has spread arose mantle, looking out toward the sunshine, and lean-ing on her elbows, her head on her hand. Signed at the lower left, Fantin. Purchased from Messrs.
