For the picture called LAddition the models werethose of Meissonier and Vibert, the formers theseated figure and the latters the one standing.Mr. Watrous tells with considerable glee of theirreminiscences of these great painters and of theirquarrels while he was at work upon this little canvas.Here again the faces are very expressive, but it willbe noted that there is nothing of great difficulty orsuperior distinction in the poses, and the lighting isnot unusual. The whole picture centres upon therepresentation of a commonplace enough incidentand its merit lies in the fact that it is accomplishedin a way that establishes its claim to considerationas a work of art, whereas a little less of fineness inany one of many details and it would sink to the levelof a mere illustration. In two other subjects.
