Handbook of Trees of the Northekn States and Canada 41 The Arbor-Vitae is a tree commonly from50-60 ft. in height and 2-3 ft. in diameter oftrunk, or sometimes larger, and develops awide-based pyramidal head when growingapart from other trees. It sometimes formsexclusive and dense forests in swampy locali-ties and along the banks of streams, but isoftener in company with the Black Ash, SwampSpruce, Canoe Birch, Ked and Silver Maples,Tamarack, Balsam Fir, etc. It is abundantand of quite general distribution in sufficientlymoist localities througliout the northern partof its range, but in the southern Allegheniesoccurs only at high altitudes.
