H. M. S. Daphne Dismasted off Mazattan [Mazatlan] October 28th 1851
Drawing signed 'T.W.S' which records the same incident drawn (from the other side) by the captain of the ship, Edward Gennys Fanshawe, for which see PAD4669 and his related account of it. The artist was possibly someone else in the crew, given that 'Daphne' was on independent service in the Pacific and at Mazatlan on her own when caught in the hurricane that dismasted her. One man died of injuries sustained when her masts came down and Fanshawe was trapped in the debris for some time. Fortunately the ships' anchors held, unlike many other vessels driven ashore. Following the storm Fanshawe obtained the mast of a wrecked schooner to replace his own and returned jury-rigged to England round Cape Horn shortly afterwards. 'Daphne's' figurehead, visble here, is also in the collection.
