Gustave Le Gray was a French photographer, born in 1820 in Villiers-le-Bel, France. He was one of the first photographers to use the wet-plate process. Le Gray was a teacher, and he taught many of the most important French photographers, including Charles Nègre, who was his student. He also was the author of one of the first photography manuals, "Traité théorique et pratique de photographie sur papier et sur verre" (Theoretical and Practical Treatise of Photography on Paper and Glass) He died in 1884. His photographs are considered an important record of the French landscape and seascape in the 19th century.
