Christiana and its harbor, and anexcellent lunch at the Holmenkollen Hotel,can be had before visiting the sanatoria. Tuberculosis is treated here, as everywhereelse, by fresh air, sunshine, and wholesomefood. And I have never seen a place where Ithought the combination could be more enjoy-ably obtained than here. In the winter thehemlock boughs of the surrounding forest areweighted with snow, and huge, high snow-banks at times block the road that leads upthe mountain. But the sun shines ever inat the great broad glass windows of theenclosed piazzas. A little distance back of the hotel is thecourse for the ski races which are held hereannually. It makes one shiver just to lookat that precipitous mountainside, with thebig set off about half way down thatthrows a man into the air thirty to forty feet.I have heard of Americans getting skateson, but if Norwegians ever get skis onthey must have an awful time explaining totheir wives the next morning.
