Public domain photograph of 19th-century Polish painting, free to use, no copyright restrictions image - Picryl description
Like his brother Aleksander, Maksymilian Gierymski was not only one of the most important Polish painters in the nineteenth century, but in his time one of the most outstanding personalities amongst the Polish painters in Munich. In German writings he is also regarded as a highly esteemed member of the “Munich school”. By contrast with many other Polish artists – there were over 330 – who studied at the Academy of Art in Munich, he remained in the city after completing his studies in 1868. In 1874 he became a member of Royal Academy of the Arts in Berlin. In the same year he died of pulmonary disease in Bad Reichenhall. His paintings can be found in German and Polish museums and collections.
