Witsen was known for his paintings of Amsterdam and his photographs of traditional Dutch life. He also wrote poetry and essays on art and culture. He was a member of the Tachtigers, a late 19th-century Dutch literary movement that was known for its opposition to contemporary social norms and its emphasis on individualism. He was also a member of the Amsterdam Impressionism movement. He died in 1923.
