CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, Falcon 9 rocket with Dragon capsule attached on top begins a rollout demonstration test to Space Launch Complex-40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Preparations continue for NASA’s first Commercial Resupply Services, or CRS-1, mission to the International Space Station. The rollout to the pad for liftoff is planned for Sunday morning, Oct. 7. Liftoff from CCAFS is scheduled during an instantaneous window at 8:35 p.m. EDT Sunday evening. SpaceX CRS-1 is an important step toward making America’s microgravity research program self-sufficient by providing a way to deliver and return significant amounts of cargo, including science experiments, to and from the orbiting laboratory. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, workers using an overhead crane lift a solid rocket motor into the Vertical Integration Facility at Launch Complex 41. It then will be attached to the United Launch Alliance Atlas V booster stage, already at the pad. NASA's Juno spacecraft is scheduled to launch aboard an Atlas V from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Aug. 5.The solar-powered spacecraft will orbit Jupiter's poles 33 times to find out more about the gas giant's origins, structure, atmosphere and magnetosphere and investigate the existence of a solid planetary core. VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – On Space Launch Complex 2 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, another solid rocket booster is raised to vertical for installation on the Delta II rocket for the NOAA-N Prime satellite. NOAA-N Prime is the latest polar-orbiting operational environmental weather satellite developed by NASA for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- In the Astrotech payload processing facility at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, workers help guide NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory, or OCO, into place on a transporter. The spacecraft will be moved to Launch Complex 576-E. An umbilical line is attached. OCO will collect precise global measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Earth's atmosphere. Scientists will analyze OCO data to improve our understanding of the natural processes and human activities that regulate the abundance and distribution of this important greenhouse gas.
