trees standing on an acre, whichwould be twelve feet each way, the total amount of woodat fifty-four years would be 21,600 cubic feet, of which19,500 would make lumber cutting, say, round 100,000feet, board measure. This would be an ideal stand, whichgeneral practice can hardly hope to attain. In all the above calculations it must not be overlookedthat we have made reference only to box-boards—that is,the lowest quality of boards, extremely knotty. If theobject were to grow saw-timber with the largest amountof clear material the results would be entirely different,since that would require the growing of a much largernumber of trees per acre until the twenty-fifth or thirtiethyear, when the individuals would develop in length andby the close stand clear each other of branches, but thediameter development would suffer.
