Gray of 226 Fifty-ninth Street, Washington, D.C. was working as a domestic when she heard about the local National Youth Adminstration War Production and Training Center. With uncertain earnings which sometimes drop as low as $4.50 a week, she decided to register for NYA training. Mrs. Lela M. Richmond and Mrs. Sadie M. Franklin enrolled her at the center
