description

Summary

Self-Portrait with Dr. Arrieta, the last of Goya's many self-portraits, was executed late in his life. In 1819, Goya had fallen seriously ill and his doctor, Eugenio José García Arrieta, nursed him back to health. On recovering, he presented Arrieta with this painting which shows the physician ministering to his patient.

Francisco Goya (1746–1828) found himself with a long career being a romantic painter, printmaker, commentator, and chronicler. With most of his works done in the late 18th century and the early 19th century, Francisco Goya was termed as the last of the Old Masters and first of the modern. Francisco Goya was very successful as a painter and his works on portraits were extraordinary.
