Summary
Extract from Edward Ardizzone, 'Baggage to the Enemy', John Murray (1941), p. 55: 'We threaded our way up the street
again and had almost reached the bridge, when 'ping' - a rifle bullet passed between mine and Kessell's head. We ducked down by a wall and
crept forward till we could see the bridge. It had been cut clean in half.
image: A street with a gun placement in the lower foreground right. A small dog wanders across the road towards two
British soldiers on the left, who stand at the back of a truck drinking. There are also sentries leaning against the two control posts on
either side of the road. Ruined buildings lining the street can be seen in the background.
