Summary

Français : Académie d'homme assis (le garde Higgins) de William Etty. National Army Museum, Londres.

William Etty (1787–1849) was an English painter known for his depictions of classical and biblical scenes, as well as his nudes. He was born in York and studied at the Royal Academy in London. Etty's work was often criticised for its sensual nature, but he remained true to his style and subject matter. Some of his most famous works include 'Judith and Holofernes', 'The Sirens' and 'Cleopatra's Arrival in Cilicia'. Despite financial difficulties throughout his career, Etty continued to paint until his death in 1849. Today, his works can be found in museums and galleries around the world, including the Tate Britain and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
