Engines for the USS Nebraska at Moran Brothers shipyard, Seattle, circa 1903 (MOHAI 8907)

In 1901, the Moran Brothers Company shipyard of Seattle won the bid to build one of three battleships for the U. S. Navy. Construction of the ship, named Nebraska, began on July 4, 1902 and the ship was launched on October 7, 1904. Over 1,000 workers helped build the Nebraska, a Virginia-class pre-dreadnought battleship with a beam of 76 feet and a length of 441 feet.
This image shows the main propelling engines for the USS Nebraska during the construction at the shipyard, located at the foot of South Charles Street south of Pioneer Square. The 19,000 horsepower engines enabled the Nebraska to reach a top speed of 19 knots.
