DéfenseRochefort-en-terre
Summary
Français : Défense de Rochefort-en-terre, 29 avril 1793English: In 1793, the castle of Rochefort-en-Terre was attacked by royalist insurgents. The small city of Rochefort used to be a stronghold of republican sympathizers. Three patriots died defending it in the name of the Republic, causing the village to be called Roche-des-Trois for a couple of years. The scene shows Chouan troops (on the left) facing the fire of Republican defenders on the right. The blossoming fruit-tree arching over the Republicans suggests it is spring-time for a new-born Republic that shows the promise of later fruits, while the calvary behind which the enemy is sheltering symbolizes the catholic values for which they fight
