. The mask and the god-dess in the middle panel of the north wall are not the same as themask and the goddess in the middle panel of the south wall. There isalso variety in the masks and the statues of the outer panels and manyminor differences, some of which were clearly intentional. As inOriental rugs and Renaissance tapestries and other examples ofgenius in ornament, the repetition that brings balance and reducesnatural forms to human terms is relieved by happy variety in detail. The west or windowed wall of the room consists of three panels, the outer two of which are the same, reversed. The middle one showsa bowl of fruit with parrot above. The outer two show a grotto, fountains and bright-coloured birds. The Boscoreale frescoes would be interesting to rejjroduce onmodern walls, with the brush on canvas or with the block paper. PATTEEN AND TEXTURE PAPERS Chinese wall papers and those based on them (Plates II, IV)occupy an intermediate position between picture papers and pattern 380
