DCM 0834: Peter Bressan; Anonymous Tenor Recorder (Voice Flute) in D(?)

description

Summary

This instrument is a composite of a likely original head joint with body and foot joints later manufactured. As is, given its present dimensions, the instrument would seem to be a voice flute in D, so-called. However, its original body and foot joints may have been adequately longer to yield a tenor in C, similar to DCM 1321.
Instrument type: Tenor Recorder (Voice Flute) in D(?)
Medium: Boxwood, stained dark brown, ivory ferrule.; 57.45 cm.
Key Holes System: 1/7 holes.
Mark Maximum: P u I / BRESSAN / (Lancastrian rose)
Mark Additional: Mark on top. Mark is surrounded by 3 small dots.
Condition: The foot joint is cracked in 2 places at the socket, and has 2 twisted wire repairs. The head joint socket is cracked and missing a little over 100 degrees of its ivory ferrule. The edge is badly altered and distorted, and the block possibly not original, is partly missing its beak, and is missing a small area due to wood rot.
Provenance: Henning Oppermann, Basel, 4 Mar. 1929.

The Dayton C. Miller collection in the Library of Congress, contains nearly 1,700 flutes and other wind instruments, statuary, iconography, books, music, trade catalogs, tutors, patents, and other materials mostly related to the flute. It includes both Western and non-Western examples of flutes from around the world, with at least 460 European and American instrument makers represented. Items in the collection date from the 16th to the 20th century.
