Greek Corinthian column capital, Metropolitan Museum of Art
Summary
The capital is a variant of the early Hellenistic Corinthian capital, with a double-bodied sphinx decorating its front face. The sides are ornamented with palmettes, while the back, not meant to be seen, is unfinished. Two corners of the abacus, with their openwork supporting helices, survive.
