'Corcovado', Rio di Janeiro RMG PW2019, William Lionel Wyllie
Summary
'Corcovado', Rio di Janeiro
A cruise to South America is not recorded in 'We Were One' (1935), M.A. Wyllie's memoir of her husband, but another watercolour in the series is dated 1914, evidence that Wyllie and his wife cruised to South America in the early part of 1914 before the outbreak of World War I in August. Mrs Wyllie later referred to their pleasure cruises 'on board the now luxurious liners'. The Corcovado Mountain is shown before the building of the statue of Christ by Heitor da Silva Costa and Paul Landowski (1926-31), now one of Rio's best-known tourist landmarks.
