. Sawyerwas drawn against Jock Hutchinson, and they had agreat match. I believe that if you talked with Sawyerhe would tell you that it was one of the greatest matchesof the many he has played. He was 4 down and 5 toplay, but won. Sawyer met me in the semifinals and there wasanother tight match, but my 71 against his 75 gave mea chance to play George Simpson in the final. From thefirst day of the event I had been playing like one pos-sessed and by the time the semifinals were reached thegallery had become very large. It was an unforgettablesecond of September. My caddie, I felt, contributedmuch to my success. He lived in Rogers Park andcaddied at Edgewater. He was a fine, loyal lad whohad been carrying for me in all the tournaments aroundChicago. Behind him in the gallery were scores ofBeverly caddies who had been permitted to follow theplayers. At the end of each successful match the shoutwould reach me: They all look alike to Chick! When I reached the final there was much excitement
